Comments about this years awards.

GREEN DAY, BEYONCE AND GAGA SCORE AT THE VMAs

Green Day, Beyonce and Lady GaGa scored three Moonmen each at the 2009 MTV Video Music Awards. Green Day took home hardware for Best Rock Video, Best Direction and Best Cinematography for “21 Guns.” Lady GaGa won for Best New Artist for “Poker Face” and Best Special Effects and Best Art Direction for “Paparazzi,” while Beyonce took home Best Choreography, Best Editing and the coveted Video of the Year for “Single Ladies (Put A Ring On It).”

The most-talked about moment of the show came when Taylor Swift was accepting her Best Female Video Award. Outspoken rapper Kanye West walked onstage and took the microphone out of her hand, declared that Beyonce’s “Single Ladies” was the best video of all time. Swift looked shocked and saddened by West’s actions. Later in the show, as Beyonce accepted her Video of the Year Award, she pulled one of the classiest moments in VMA history by inviting Swift up to have her time in the spotlight.

The show featured performances by Taylor Swift, Beyonce, Green Day, Muse, P!nk and a standout collaboration between Jay-Z and Alicia Keys on “Empire State of Mind.” Janet Jackson kicked off the night with a tribute to her late brother Michael and at the end of the show, host Russell Brand premiered the trailer for Michael Jackson’s This Is It film.

KANYE WEST APOLOGIZES

After the big show, Kanye West took to his blog and apologized. "I'm sooooo sorry to Taylor Swift and her fans and her mom," he wrote. "I spoke to her mother right after and she said the same thing my mother would've said. She is very talented! I like the lyrics about being a cheerleader and she's in the bleachers! I'm in the wrong for going on stage and taking away from her moment!” He continued, "Beyoncé's video was the best of this decade!!!! I'm sorry to my fans if I let you guys down!!!! I'm sorry to my friends at MTV. I will apologize to Taylor 2mrw. Welcome to the real world!!!! Everybody wanna booooo me but I'm a fan of real pop culture!!! No disrespect but we watchin' the show at the crib right now cause ... well you know!!!! I'm still happy for Taylor!!!! Boooyaaawwww!!!! You are very very talented!!! I gave my awards to Outkast when they deserved it over me ... That's what it is!!!!!!! I'm not crazy y'all, i'm just real. Sorry for that!!! I really feel bad for Taylor and I'm sincerely sorry!!! Much respect!!!!!"

P!nk Tweeted: “Kanye West is the biggest piece of S**t on Earth. Quote Me. My heart goes out to Taylor Swift. She is a sweet and talented girl and deserved her moment… Beyonce is a classy lady.”

PRE-SHOW HIGHLIGHTS

Tim Kash introduced Twilight’s Ashley Green, who was the Fashion Correspondent on the red carpet for MTV News.

The two interviewed Green Day on the carpet. Singer Billie Joe Armstrong talked about the band’s performance saying he hopes there “is a lot of chaos on stage.”

iJustine, a-k-a Justine Ezarik, who Tweeted throughout the show, was stationed on top of the Radio City Music Hall marquee, with a bird’s eye view of the red carpet. She tracked the most talked about celebs on Twitter. Lady GaGa, actor Taylor Lautner and Taylor Swift made the biggest splashes on the social networking site.

Lady GaGa showed up on the carpet with her date, “Kermit the Frog.” She gave “Kermit” a kiss for the fans.

MTV News’ Sway interviewed Shakira. He joked that he never watched a video more than her new clip for “She Wolf.”

P!nk arrived on a fire truck with her husband Carey Hart. She wore the same exact dress as Shakira!

Alicia Keys talked to Tim Kash about Janet Jackson’s tribute to her late brother Michael. She also talked about her performance with Jay-Z.

Sway chatted to Kristin Cavallari about The Hills. Kristin dished on some Hills gossip saying that she and Audrina Patridge do not get along.

Cobra Starship arrived on a double decker New York City sightseeing bus.

The cast of Fame introduced the world premiere of the music video for “Fame,” by Naturi Naughton and Collins Pennie.

Jermaine Jackson talked to Tim Kash about the Michael Jackson tribute. He didn’t know much about the performance and but did say that Janet Jackson will “kick ass.” Then Kash introduced a first look at the upcoming Michael Jackson film This Is It.

Tim Kash approached Beyonce for an interview on the red carpet. You could hear photographers yelling for Kash to move out of the way. One of Beyonce’s bodyguards, Julius, nearly knocked Kash down.

Sway gave the VMA for Best Video (That Should Have Won a Moonman) to the Beastie Boys’ classic clip for “Sabotage.”

Cobra Starship and FeFe Dobson rocked a pre-show MTV VMA concert in New York City. The event was sponsored by Taco Bell and while the “Good Girls Go Bad” band was playing the fast food chain handed out free tacos and burritos to concert goers.

WHAT HAPPENED ON THE RED CARPET

Denver band 3Oh!3 gave red roses to female journalists while walking the red carpet.

Kimora Lee Simmons and her new husband, Djimon Hounsou, quickly walked the carpet hand-in-hand.

BIG CELEB SIGHTINGS! Gerard Butler, Diddy, Lady GaGa, Taylor Lautner, Jennifer Lopez and her husband Marc Anthony.

WORST DRESSED! Kanye West’s girlfriend, Amber Rose, walked the red carpet in an outrageous leopard bodysuit.

BEST DRESSED! Hands down, Taylor Swift turned the most heads with her silver and white beaded floor length stress, reminiscent of a glamorous movie star.

THE BIG SHOW

Madonna opened the show with a speech about Michael Jackson. She talked about their similarities. Both were born in August of 1951 and both have eight siblings. Madonna shared a story about taking Michael out to dinner in 1991. On a funny note, Madonna said her two boys are obsessed with Jackson explaining, “There is a lot of crotch grabbing and moon walking taking place in my house right now.”

A dance troupe all dressed as Jackson took the stage and danced to MJ’s “Thriller,” “Bad,” and “Smooth Criminal,” as the videos played on a huge screen behind them.

Janet Jackson then took the stage and sang her collaboration with Michael, “Scream.”

Katy Perry, with help from Aerosmith guitarist Joe Perry, performed Queen’s “We Will Rock You,” as host Russell Brand walked out.

Brand said the show is about great music videos and a tribute to Michael Jackson. He talked about his controversial monologue last year and how the Jonas Brothers have forgiven him for making fun of their purity rings. He went on to discuss his love for Lady GaGa and then said he was saying all that to “F**k her.”

Brand introduced Shakira and Taylor Lautner, who gave the Best Female Video Award to Taylor Swift for “You Belong with Me.” Swift tapped Lady GaGa on the shoulder as she approached the stage to accept the award. During Swift’s speech, Kanye West stormed the stage and took the microphone from Swift. He announced that Beyonce’s video for “Single Ladies” was one of the “best videos of all time.” Taylor Swift looked saddened and shocked by Kanye’s action. West gave Beyonce a kiss as he walked back to his seat.

Jack Black and Gossip Girl’s Leighton Meester gave out the award for Best Rock Video to Green Day for “21 Guns.” Frontman Billie Joe Armstrong asked MTV to play more music videos.

Actress Miranda Cosgrove and singer Justin Beiber introduced Taylor Swift, who performed “You Belong with Me.” The song started in the 42nd Street subway station. During the tune, she hopped onto the F train and took it one stop, then ran out of the subway with fans following her. She appeared right in front of Radio City Music Hall and finished the song standing on a taxi cab on Sixth Avenue.

Cobra Starship’s Gabe Saporta and Fall Out Boy’s Pete Wentz introduced Lady GaGa. The theatrical performer sang her hit “Paparazzi.” The scantily clad singer sat at the piano with one leg up on the keys and played a spirited solo. She stood up and fake blood began to drip down her stomach and at the end of the song, she was lifted into the air on a wire.

Russell Brand introduced Nelly Furtado and Kristin Cavallari. The two gave the Best Pop Video Award to Britney Spears for “Womanizer.” Britney is currently on tour, but did appear in a video accepting the trophy.

Meagan Fox and Adam Brody introduced Green Day, who played “21 Guns.” At the end of the performance, Billie Joe Armstrong invited fans on the stage. The fans stormed the stage and lifted Armstrong into the air as he finished the song.

Twilight’s Taylor Lautner, Kristen Stewart and Robert Pattinson introduced the extended trailer for New Moon. The film hits theaters on November 20th.

Chace Crawford and Ne-Yo introduced Beyonce, who performed “Single Ladies.” The performance mirrored her video for the tune with three ladies dancing. At the end of the song, Katy Perry turned to her date and held up her left hand and pointed to her ring finger.

Diddy and Jamie-Lynn Sigler gave away the Moonman for Best Male Video. Diddy mentioned nominee Kanye West and the crowd booed and began chanting “Taylor.” T.I., who is currently in jail, won for his collaboration with Rihanna on “Live Your Life.” Diddy accepted the award on his behalf.

Gerard Butler introduced Muse, who performed their new single “Uprising,” at a small theater in New York in front of 700 lucky fans.

Jennifer Lopez gave the award for Best Hip Hop Video to Eminem for “We Made You.” Em accepted the award by saying, “It’s been a minute. Thanks to all my fans for sticking with me.” He also paid tribute for his late friend and D12 member Proof.

Tracy Morgan and Eminem presented the Best New Artist award to Lady GaGa for “Poker Face.” She was wearing a hat and mask and ripped them both off to expose her face as she thanked her fans, god and the gays. A smattering of boos came from the crowd as she walked off the stage.

Serena Williams introduced P!nk, who sang on a perch high above the Radio City stage. Her scantily clad outfit harkened back to Lil Kim’s 1999 VMA outfit, a leotard with one exposed breast covered by a heart sticker. P!nk swung on a trapeze while singing “Sober.”

Jimmy Fallon and Andy Samberg presented the Video of the Year trophy to Beyonce for “Single Ladies (Put A Ring On It).” She asked Taylor Swift to come out and have her her VMA moment. The crowd roared as Swift walked out from backstage. After Taylor gave her speech, she hugged Beyonce and the two walked off stage together.

Russell Brand introduced Jay-Z, the final performer of the night. He was joined by Alicia Keys on piano and vocals for “Empire State of Mind.” Classic New York City images graced the screen behind Jay and Alicia through the song.

Russell Brand then premiered the trailer for Michael Jackson’s This Is It. The film hits theaters on October 29th.

During the show itself, Tracy Morgan and Eminem appeared in a series of short spoofs. Throughout the event, MTV aired clips of Morgan, who said he really wants to win a Moonman for Best New Artist. In one video, Tracy was on a treadmill working out and complaining. Em held out a Moonman to get him running. In another, Morgan was in the studio butchering “Time After Time.” Em said, “Let me get something to make this work.” The clip then cut to Morgan duetting with Cyndi Lauper. The award ended up going to Lady GaGa, much to Morgan’s chagrin.

IN THE LOBBY OF RADIO CITY MUSIC HALL

Joe Jackson, father of Michael Jackson, made his way through the busy lobby at Radio City Music Hall. His entourage now rivals that of his late son. He was there to watch his daughter Janet pay tribute to her brother.

GRAMMY-winning singer Adele strolled in right before the show started with some friends. The “Chasing Pavements” singer was dressed casually in leggings and leopard print flats.

VMA winners OK Go were dapper in suits, drinking at the bar alongside The Cold War Kids, who were also in attendance at the show.

MTV host Alexa Chung in a short ornate black and white dress looked excited for her first U-S VMA as the British TV personality excitedly chatted with friends.

As the audience waited for the show to begin, the lights were still up and the crowd got a very clear view of the T-shaped stage set up.

Those lucky enough to attend the show sat in one of four levels inside the venue. Many fans stood and cheered as their favorite artists arrived.

Paramore’s Hayley Williams in a black and white number, took photos with some sneaky fans who worked their way up to her seat.

Perez Hilton sported a mo-hawk as he caught up with gal pal, Amanda Bynes, laughing before they grabbed their seats.

Kayne West’s girlfriend Amber Rose wore a shocking nude colored tight body suit dress.

House act Wale got the crowd ready saying, “We’re gonna burn this motherf**king house down tonight!”

The Kings of Leon brought their beautiful girlfriends to the show but were among the last ones to enter the venue. The boys decided with 12 minutes to showtime that they still had time for a pee break and rushed off the bathroom.

Gerard Butler showed up last minute as well and was kind enough to take a few photos with fans as he made his way in.

INSIDE RADIO CITY

The whole audience rose to their feet to welcome Madonna as she opened the show to pay tribute to Michael Jackson by saying how close their lives were. The emotional speech caused many inside the venue to tear up.

With their mics on, Wale and 3OH!3 chatted on stage during a commercial break and played with the audience. Then they got together to perform their track “Don’t Trust Me.”

The whole crowd danced to Wale’s cover of Coldplay’s “Viva La Vida” during a commercial break, while girls shrieked when they caught a glimpse of Adam Brody from the side of the stage.

During the next break, Solonge Knowles and Wale did a cover of the Kings of Leon’s “Use Somebody.”

During another break, the All-American Rejects did their hit “Give You Hell” with Wale. Frontman Tyson Ritter was shirtless and covered in bodypaint. The performance got the audience up and dancing.

BY THE BATHROOM

Fall Out Boy bassist Pete Wentz couldn’t go a few feet without someone wanting a picture with him or wanting to get his number. This includes fans, musicians and even movie directors.

Just before the show started, Fonzworth Bentley rushed towards the restroom saying, “I’d rather pee on myself than miss Janet,” talking about Janet Jackson’s tribute to her brother, Michael.

Buzz Aldrin, the second man on the moon, had handed out the VMA for Breakthrough Video earlier in the night. He and his wife had a chat with newcomer Anjulie, who lost the trophy to Matt and Kim.

Seeing her new haircut, one fan pleaded with singer Cassie to pose in some photos for her. Talking about her new do, the fan screamed, “I love it!! Let me take some pictures.” Cassie relented.

Fans caught MTV VJ Damien Fahey chatting with Evan from the Real World/Road Rules Challenge shows and got pictures with both of them. Johanna from The Real World: Austin was nearby too and got in some shots as well.
